Calendering
Calendering is a kind of printing process. When the glazed pressworks is dry, hot press the dried presswork by calender bowl and then cool it. It is further process of glazing, making the clear glazing denser, smoother and higher gloss, just like an ideal mirror film. The process can lift the quality and grade of presswork with more competitive.
Process and method
It adopts heated wires to heat the smooth polished surface of special calender bowl, then, under a pressure of 100-200kgf/cm, roll across the glazed surface of presswork. When the surface cools down, there will be a shinny surface film. Calendering suits to any glazed presswork and can lift the quality and grade of presswork with more competitive
Common problems and solutions
Surface blistering
Reasons:
a. too high calendaring belt temperature soften part of the coating
b. the glazing paints do not match with calendering requirements; when the surface coating cools down, the racking strength against the calendering belt is weak;
c. the calendering pressure is too large;
d. the paper temperature is high and uneven;
Solutions:
a. properly reduce the calendering temperature;
b. lower the calendering speed, improve the glazing paints to match with process requirements and increase the racking strength;
c. reduce the pressure;
d. keep the paper dry and even temperature;
The presswork does not stick to the belt
Reason:
a. the coating is too thin
b. the viscosity of coating is too low
c. low calendering temperature and pressure
Solutions:
a. increase the coating
b. pay attention to the viscosity of coating
c. increase the temperature and pressure
Bad glossiness of the film
Reasons:
a. the belt is worn out, so its glossiness is bad;
b. the calendering pressure is not enough;
C. the paper is too tough with strong absorbency;
d. the buffing oil is of weak viscosity with little and thin amount;
e. reduce of calendering temperature;
f. the belt is dull, dirty or settlings on its surface;
Solutions:
a. replace the belt with a new one or grind it;
b. increase the calendering pressure to technological parameter;
c. as the paper is of bad quality, it shall be coated with a primer;
d. increase the viscosity of buffing oil and apply more coating
e. increase the calendering temperature;
f. clean or polish the belt
Unconformity of glossiness at the two sides of the film
Reasons:
a. uneven calendering belt pressure;
b. unconformity of wearing degree at the two sides of calendering belt;
c. unconformity of thickness of buffing oil at the two sides of calendering paper;
d. since the composition roller is used for small size presswork, it cause unconformity between the middle and the two ends;
Solutions:
a. adjust the pressure at the two sides of calendering belt;
b. adjust the distance of calendering mechanism;
c. pay attention to the coating evenness
d. pay attention to the composition roller shape and adjust it whenever necessary;
The blank area of the calendered presswork is light color
