Application of Laser
Laser processing technology takes the mutual effects between laser bean and the targets to carry out cutting, welding, surface treatment, punching and micro-treatment on materials (metal or non-metal) and as a light source to distinguish objects. The technology is traditionally applied in laser processing field, covering light, machine, electricity, materials as well as inspection. Its research scope includes:
1. Laser processing system: It includes laser, lighting system, machine tool, control system and inspection system.
2. Laser processing techniques: It includes cutting, welding, surface treatment, punching, marking, scribing, micro-carving, etc.
Laser welding: It is used for welding of air locking components, such as thin and thick plates of auto, auto parts, lithium battery, heart pacemaker, sealed relay, as well as for sealing of other components that shall be free from welding pollution and shape-changing. The current main lasers are YAG, CO2 and semi-conductor pump laser.
Laser cutting: It is used to cut mental parts and special materials in auto, computer, electrical castings, circular saw blade, acryl, spring shim, copperplate under 2mm used in electronic parts, some metal mesh or plate, steel tube, tin-plated steel sheet, phosphor bronze, Bakelite plate, thin aluminum alloys, quartz glass, titanium alloy used in space industry, etc. The current main lasers are YAG and CO2.
Laser medical treatment: It is used for operation to reduce patients’ pain and avoid the risk of infection.
Laser marking: It is widely used in almost all industries. The current main lasers are YAG, CO2 and semi-conductor pump laser.
Laser punching: It is mainly used in aeronautics and astronautics, auto manufacturing, electrical instruments, chemical industries, etc. The improvement of YAG from 400w 5 years ago to 800w to 1000w now can typically represent the rapid development of laser punching. The well development of laser punching is in die production of artificial diamond and natural diamond as well as in production of jewel bearing for clocks and instruments,  aircraft engine vane, multi-layer printed wiring board, etc. The current main lasers are YAG and CO2. There are also some excimer lasers, isotope lasers and semi-conductor pump lasers.
Laser heat treatment: It is widely used in auto industry, such as in heat treatment of parts, like cylinder sleeve, crankshaft, piston ring, reverser, gears. It is also widely used in aeronautics and astronautics, machine tool and other mechanical industries. Laser heat treatment is much widely used in China than in other countries. The current main lasers are YAG and CO2.
Laser rapid prototyping: It is a combination of laser processing technique, computer numerical control (CNC) and flexible manufacturing technology. It is most used in mold and dies industry. The current main lasers are YAG and CO2.
Laser coating: it is widely used in aeronautics and astronautics, molding and electromechanical industries. Currently, the main types of lasers are large power YAG and CO2.
